New Orleans is not known for its cool weather. Not for a second. But we do have our occasional chilly days, even some that are downright bad to the bone numbing! But, unlike our friends up north, most of us don't have a full winter wardrobe to turn to when fall starts. Usually, we make do by piling on different layers that ultimately seem to work. That's why scarves and shawls are a must. They add just that extra touch of warmth, but can be shed as the temperatures fluctuate throughout the day. In fact, scarves and shawls are the perfect year-round accessory: who hasn't gone into a restaurant from the 98 degree scorching temperature outside, only to be frozen by the moderate 70 degree ambience inside a restaurant, movie or grocery store?!

I bought my Singer Memo-Matic 700 200 needle knitting machine in 1989. Love at first sight! It was sold in a small store in Clearview Mall in the New Orleans area. My only instructions were from conversations I had with the incredibly knowledgable saleswoman who worked there. Of course, I had to follow that purchase with a SPR-60N 200 needle ribber, and then an electric Hague Linker. And the yarns: so many colors, so many textures, too many choices! I have knitted garments for the entire family (They still run and hide when they see a bright houndstooth pattern forming on the machine!) My focus is now on smaller items such as scarves and shawls so I can try new techniques without committing to an entire garment. Plus, my family has stopped running away!
